With the motto of "Saving lives, Protecting the environment and Restoring Dignity", Working on Fire is an Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) aimed at providing work opportunities to young men and women. The programme resides under, and is funded by, the Department of Environmental Affairs and is focused on implementing integrated fire management in South Africa.
They employ more than 5000 young men and women, who are fully trained as wildfire firefighters and are stationed at more than 200 bases across South Africa. The firefighters are recruited from marginalised communities and trained in fire awareness and education, prevention and fire suppression skills. In addition, they are also trained in skills such as first aid, carpentry, cooking, health and safety and communications.
Watch the Helderberg base of Working on Fire sing the National Anthem.
